More schools earn higher marks on state’s school ratings
The state released preliminary school ratings this week, and this year more 27J schools earned higher ratings than in the previous four years.
The ratings, also known as school performance frameworks, are part of the state’s school accountability system and are used to accredit school districts and assign school ratings. The ratings are calculated by combining student academic growth, students’ academic achievement and postsecondary and workforce readiness data such as graduation, dropout and college matriculation rates which are the percentage of students earning college entrance, industry certificates and military enlistment.
Schools get ratings in one of four levels, the highest being Green (Performance), then Yellow (Improvement), Orange (Priority Improvement), and the lowest, Red (Turnaround).
The district as a whole earned an Improvement (yellow) rating.
Updated 9/13/24 at 9:27 AM: A previous version of this graphic incorrectly represented the 2024 rating for Innovations & Options. The correct score is 69.8 for a Performance rating.
Considering district-managed schools and charter schools, this year's ratings included more schools in the higher levels assigned by the state and fewer schools in the lowest categories compared to last year’s ratings.
- 18 schools were rated in the green tier, compared to only 11 schools last year. Two schools’ performance ratings were reduced by one tier (Performance down to Improvement) due to low student test participation.
- The increase in green ratings resulted in fewer schools in the yellow category. Nine were at the yellow level this year compared to 10 schools last year.
- Two fewer schools were rated in the orange or red level. Four schools were in the bottom two tiers this year compared to six schools last year.
The state’s Accountability Clock is a designation for schools and districts that receive the two lowest ratings (priority improvement or turnaround). If a school or district has been on the Accountability Clock for five consecutive years, the state board directs a course of action.
