Leader selected for new Talon Ridge Middle School

27J’s newest middle school now has its first leader.

Fabricio Velez, a veteran 27J Schools administrator, was named the principal of the new Talon Ridge Middle School in Thornton, which is set to open in the fall of 2027.

“Fabricio brings strong expertise in building effective systems and structures that support both adults and students, along with a proven ability to develop people and lead teams with clarity and purpose,” Executive Director of Schools Brett Minne said. “His thoughtful, intentional approach to leadership positions Talon Ridge to open as a well-organized, student-centered school grounded in strong culture and continuous improvement.”

Velez joined 27J Schools as an assistant principal at Prairie View High School in 2015, later becoming principal at Stuart Middle School and serving for the past 4+ years as principal of Vikan Middle School. Prior to that, his experience includes 13 years as a teacher and administrator in the Adams 12 School District.

“I am incredibly honored and excited to serve as the founding principal of Talon Ridge Middle School,” Velez said. “This is my 26th year in public education and my 18th year as a school administrator. Those experiences have prepared me to lead Talon Ridge with the integrity, compassion, and the student-centered leadership that have defined my career.”

Talon Ridge construction is wrapping up this spring, but the district made the strategic decision to shift the school’s opening until fall 2027 because of slower than anticipated enrollment growth around the school.

Velez will start his work as Talon Ridge principal on July 1, 2026, to begin planning for the school’s opening.

“Together with the staff, students, and our community, my goal is to create an innovative, engaging instructional model grounded in our district's Thinking Classroom and centered on belonging, curiosity, and deep learning.”

He encouraged families to be on the lookout for opportunities in the coming year to engage in the design and development of the Talon Ridge school community.
