Maintaining public trust and providing transparency as well as accountability is a critical component of the 2021 Bond Program. The 27J Board of Education has established a community Bond Oversight Committee to monitor Bond activities and expenditures of funds to ensure resources are used efficiently and appropriately. The Bond Oversight committee meets on a monthly basis throughout the bond’s term.
Blaine Nickeson represents the north planning area and serves as the Bond Oversight Committee Vice-Chair. Mr. Nickeson has lived in the area 18 years and has two children attending 27J schools. Mr. Nickeson served five years on the 27J School Board and wants to help guide the district’s growth to best serve all families. Mr. Nickeson hopes his work on the BOC can help to clear up common misconceptions surrounding Colorado school funding, particularly related to marijuana tax money and property taxes in special metropolitan districts that don’t flow to 27J schools.
Troy Whitmore
Troy Whitmore is the current chairperson of Bond Oversight Committee and a resident of the 27J district for more than 20 years. As the parent of a 27J graduate, Mr. Whitmore wanted to join the BOC to represent the voice of taxpayers and contribute to 27J’s robust school system. With budgets tighter than ever due to inflationary factors, Mr. Whitmore says he’s been impressed with the way 27J staff have made tough decisions to stay on target with the money voters approved. He reminds you that the BOC is third checkpoint to make sure bond money is spent appropriately.
Johanna Brown represents the south area of 27J as a member of the Bond Oversight Committee. She’s called the area home for 19 years. Ms. Brown is the mother of five children, a current Prairie View High School student and four PVHS graduates. Participating as a BOC member gives her the opportunity to support the district while helping to ensure the bond money is spent in the manner taxpayers want. Ms. Brown considers that a very important responsibility.
Jeff Pierson
Jeff Pierson represents the southern area of the district as a member of the Bond Oversight Committee. Mr. Pierson is a 27J parent and lives in Commerce City. With more than 20 years of experience working in education, Mr. Pierson understands the importance of the bond work he’s helping to oversee. As a member of the BOC, Mr. Pierson has been surprised by rising construction costs and the occasional inability to obtain project parts in a timely manner due to supply chain disruptions. Mr. Pierson believes his background can help provide valuable insight to help the BOC do its work.
Dani Jayne represents the west area of the 27J school district on the Bond Oversight Committee. Ms. Jayne lives in Riverdale Park and has 3 children in the 27J district. As an active supporter of the 2021 bond, Ms. Jayne joined the BOC to stay connected with the district. She believes 27J can become one of the best districts in Colorado. Ms. Jayne is impressed to see how 27J bond project planners work with area municipalities to share costs across various projects. She invites the public to attend a future BOC meeting to learn more about how tax dollars are put into action for the betterment of 27J Schools students.
Kevin Kerber
Kevin Kerber represents the West Planning Area as a member of the Bond Oversight Committee. He’s lived in the area 43 years and currently calls Thornton home. Mr. Kerber says he joined the BOC to be a community voice and verify that public money is being used as promised. As a member of the committee, Mr. Kerber has found that the infrastructure to run a successful school district can be complicated. But he’s impressed by the processes and procedures that are being followed by 27J planners and staff to ensure the delivery of a good product as promised to voters.
Ramon Alvarado is an at-large representative on the Bond Oversight Committee. He’s lived in the Commerce City area for the last 6 years. Mr. Alvarado wanted to join the committee to ensure that 27J is accountable and transparent with projects funded by the 2021 bond. Through his work on the BOC, Mr. Alvarado says he’s been impressed with the depth of experience and level of commitment shown by 27J staff to delivering quality products. He wants the community to know that the BOC is committed to asking questions and keeping close tabs on the status and plans for bond projects.
Sonia Montano
Sonia Montano is an at-large member of the Bond Oversight Committee. Ms. Montano lives in the Henderson/Commerce City area and she’s a 27J schools parent. Ms. Montano has lived in the area 19 years and wants to use her voice as part of the BOC to build the best schools. Ms. Montano says she’s been surprised to learn about school funding disparities through her work as a BOC member. As a result, she says the BOC provides an additional layer of oversight to help manage rising costs while ensuring the needs of 27J students are met.
John Rosasco
John Rosasco is an at-large member of the Bond Oversight Committee. He is a 27J parent with three children in the district and lived in the Brighton area for 18 years. Mr. Rosasco actively campaigned for the 2021 bond and is now giving back by serving on the Bond Oversight Committee. He’s been surprised to learn how much detail goes into the building/planning process and how meticulously each bond dollar is spent through the process. Rosasco says he will help make sure taxpayer money is used efficiently through his work on the BOC.
Susan Hillson is an alternate member of the 27J Bond Oversight Committee. Ms. Hillson has lived in the Brighton area for 15 years. Although she doesn’t have children in the 27J district, Ms. Hillson says she joined the BOC to see firsthand how tax money is being spent. So far she’s surprised at how many projects being funded by the 2021 bond and she feels the BOC members are genuinely concerned with how the money is being spent for the benefit of students and families in the 27J district.
Derek Easdon
Derek Easdon serves as an alternate member of the Bond Oversight Committee and he’s called the Brighton area home for 10 years. Mr. Easdon has a vested interest in the bond projects as the father of 3 students in the 27J district. Mr. Easdon says he’s been surprised to see the detailed accounting of taxpayer money spent through the bond program. He wants the community to know the members are working to responsibly use the bond money for the betterment of students in 27J.
