Rocky Vista High School Frequently Asked Questions

Rocky Vista High School is scheduled to open for the start of the 2027-2028 school year. 

The city of Commerce City has begun work on the project to widen 96th Avenue from Chambers to Tower roads. The city says the project is slated to be completed in summer 2026. You can find updates on this project at https://c3gov.com/96th.

Yes, as part of this construction project, Reunion Parkway will be widened to accommodate additional traffic and the eventual extension of Landmark Drive around the site. A current traffic calming circle at East 97th Avenue and Reunion will also be removed and replaced with a full movement intersection. This street widening will be primarily to accommodate entry and exit into the site.

As part of our site development process, we will build a new, two-lane section of Landmark Drive on the northside of our property that will connect to Reunion Parkway. This new section meets our site development requirements but will not be a full extension of Landmark Drive to the Reunion neighborhood. This completion of this extension could take place at a later time but would not be the responsibility of 27J Schools. 

This 93.1 acre site was dedicated to the city of Commerce City in 2023 as a school and community park site. The school site will be about 48.6 acres with 44.5 acres on the west side of the site still planned as a community park. There is no timeframe for the conceptual design or construction of this park.

Access points to the three adjacent streets are planned, including 96th Avenue, Reunion Parkway, and the new section of Landmark Drive.

Construction hours for this project are still being determined. However, the contractor will comply with the Commerce City noise ordinance, which limits construction-related noise to the hours of 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Discussions on grade configurations are currently taking place and no decisions have been made. It has, however, generally been the district’s past practice to open new high schools with a combination of high school and middle school age students.

Discussions around the development of school enrollment boundaries have started. These boundaries will be driven by the planned grade configuration for this school. Generally, during the boundary development process, potential boundary scenarios are shared with the impacted community to provide feedback prior to a decision. Boundaries are generally determined a year prior to the opening of a new school. 

Rocky Vista will offer the academic programming and opportunities offered at our other comprehensive high schools including Career and Technical Education programs. It’s important to know that while the building is being designed to offer all of these opportunities, actual class and program offerings when the building opens may be contingent on grade configurations and enrollment numbers.

Current district high school hours are roughly 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Tuesday through Friday. A final daily bell schedule will be determined by the principal in conjunction with school district leadership and will take into account factors such as bus transportation schedules.

The stadium, softball and baseball fields will be lighted with LED lighting to minimize the neighborhood impact.

Generally, a principal for a new school is hired about a year prior to the school’s anticipated opening date.

The process to select school colors and a mascot is generally a process that takes place closer to the completion and opening of the new school and will be led by the school’s principal.

The construction of this high school is being funded through a voter supported $515 million construction bond program approved by voters in 2021 that included the construction of several new schools and important improvements to existing schools and facilities. 

The current design and construction budget is $148 million.
