Attendance: Every Day Counts
At 27J Schools, we believe that every student deserves the opportunity to learn, grow, and thrive. One of the most important factors in a student's academic success is consistent school attendance. Every school day provides valuable learning experiences, opportunities to build relationships, and connections that support academic, social, and emotional growth.
Why Attendance Is Important
Regular attendance helps students:
- Build strong academic skills and stay on track with learning.
- Develop positive relationships with teachers and peers.
- Participate in classroom discussions, hands-on learning, and school activities.
- Establish routines that promote responsibility and future success.
It All Adds Up
Missing a day of school here and there may not seem like much but absences add up.
If a student misses an average of 2 days a month throughout their school career, it equals:
- 20 days a year (10 percent of the school year)
- 30 hours of math instruction
- 60 hours of reading and writing instruction
- Over one full year of school by the time they graduate
If a student misses an average of 4 days a month throughout their school career, it equals:
- 40 days a year (20 percent of the school year)
- 60 hours of math instruction
- 120 hours of reading and writing instruction
- Over two full years of school by the time they graduate
Even missing just a few days of school each month can make it more difficult for students to keep up with instruction and assignments. Good attendance habits begin early and continue to benefit students throughout their educational journey.
What Families Can Do
Families play a vital role in supporting regular attendance. You can help by:
- Establishing consistent morning and bedtime routines.
- Scheduling appointments outside of school hours whenever possible.
- Planning vacations during school breaks.
- Encouraging your child to attend school unless they are too ill to participate.
- Communicating with your child's school if attendance challenges arise.
When Your Child Is Sick
Students should stay home when they have symptoms that could spread illness or prevent them from fully participating in learning. If your child must be absent, please notify your school's attendance office as soon as possible and follow your school's procedures for reporting absences.
We're Here to Help
We understand that barriers to attendance can sometimes arise. If your family is experiencing challenges related to transportation, health, housing, or other circumstances, please reach out to your child's school. Our staff is committed to partnering with families to identify resources and develop solutions that help students attend school consistently.
A Shared Commitment
Strong attendance is a shared responsibility between students, families, and schools. By working together, we can ensure every student has the opportunity to engage in meaningful learning, build lasting connections, and achieve their full potential.
Every day matters. Every student matters. Together, let's make attendance a priority.
