My desire to become an educator came from having patient and passionate educators who challenged my potential and supported me life's challenges. I decided at the age of 16 that I wanted to do the same! So I enrolled in my high school's Teacher Cadet program, and spent two years doing practicums in local schools. While I worked with and mentored school-age children for a number of years in day camps and after school programs, I found myself really connecting with older youth, which lead me to major in English and Secondary Education at CSU. It has been through my ELA practicums and teaching experiences that I found my passion for teaching students that they have a voice and it matters and they matter, and with the right guidence / rigor, they can achieve great things!
S.E. Hinton's The Outsiders has really inspired my teaching not only because it's themes stay relevent, but my students LOVE it and always get takeaways from it. But a writer I really admire is J.K. Rowling due to her ability to capture young adults' attention and help them become life-long readers.
