Mrs. Shawna Karl

Hello!

My classes are practical arts in the area of FCS (Family Consumer Sciences)  It was previously known as Home Economics.    I teach ProStart I nd II.  These are courses are from Metro State Univeristy and the National Restaurant Association.  Students may earn 3 credits for each class by passing with a 70%/C.  These credits are paid for, compliments of SD27J.  These courses are part of the Hospitality, Tourism and Culinary Pathway.  Students are also able to use these courses, by completing and passing both PS1 and 2 as an English and Math demonstration that meets the State of Colorado's grduation demonstration guidelines.

My classroom is in C-109.  My day starts at 7:30 AM for teacher work time, then with students beginning at 8:30 AM and ends at 4:32  PM.  This year I am teaching 4 courses of Catering I  and two of Catering II.  This is such a great way to introduce students into the field of Hospitality, Tourism and Culinary Arts.   Students can become even more than an accomplished cook.  They may use what they have learned to run a restaurant, food truck, plan food events, food photograhy and so much more!

As a parent, you may join my Google Classroom with your student.  I keep most information on my Google Classroom pages for my students.  It will show current work that students are doing and when they are due.  Email me your request at skarl@sd27j.net.

Let's make the school year of 2021-22 the best one yet!
Mrs. Shawna Karl

Prior to teaching at PVHS, I substituted in Montana, Washington & Idaho.  I taught Preschool in Washington State as well.  While in Maryland, I taught Middle School FCS.   I began my career with School District 27J as a long-term substitute at Thimmig Elementary 2002-2003.  In 2003 I became a member of the Brighton High School staff and remained there until transferring to PVHS in 2010.  While at BHS I taught, Catering, Life Management, Relationships, Nutrition & Wellness & Teen Choices.

I am also the FCCLA Adviser (Family, Career & Community Leaders of America) her at PVHS.  This organization is primarily a service oriented organization.  All levels of high school students are welcome to join.  Some of you may remember this as FHA.  Watch the PVHS website for more details.

Part of my extra-curricular activities include running the clock at the Varsity Men & Women's home soccer games, as well as, keeping statistics for our Wrestling team.   Both of my sons graduated from PVHS, so my husband & I are very supportive of these extra curricular activities!

I have my Bachelor of Science degree from Ft. Hays State University in Hays, Kansas along with a Vocational Education Certification.  I have taken additional courses at several other universities and colleges, depending on where we were living.

I enjoy getting to know our students here at PVHS.  I strive to guide them in making strong life advancing choices.  I feel this course of Catering and all of the Family & Consumer Sciences courses have essential everyday learning tools as part of the curriculum.
