Upon receipt of a bomb threat, the following procedures shall be followed:

  1. The person receiving a bomb threat by telephone shall keep the caller on the phone as long as possible and get as much information as possible.
  2. The principal or his designee shall be notified of the call in order to facilitate a decision concerning the evacuation of the building.
  3. The principal or his designee will then report the call to the proper law enforcement agency.
  4. The principal or his designee should notify the superintendent of the call.
  5. A decision concerning evacuation of the building will be made by the principal or his designee.
  6. Upon decision to evacuate the building, the established building evacuation procedure will be used.
  7. The following search procedure (if alleged bomb location is not known) will be followed:
    • a. The police officer's presence should be as inconspicuous as possible.
    • b. A search of the building should be performed by those who have control over the premises or who are most familiar with the surroundings and could identify a suspicious package.
    • c. The police officer, principal or designees and the head custodian will conduct the search.
    • d. No one will enter any classroom or place where there is student activity except as directed by the principal.
    • e. If an object is located, it should not be touched or moved. The police officer involved should take over and follow a specified procedure in the handling and disposal of the object.
  8. If it is necessary to keep the students out of the building for an extended period of time during inclement weather but the students are not to be returned home, the principal should make arrangements for temporary shelter.
