The following guidelines are for use in developing an annual school calendar.

1. STUDENTS

  • Students in grades 1-12 shall have a minimum 1,080 hours of planned teacher-student instruction each year. Pre-school and kindergarten students will have no less than 450 hours of planned teacher-student instruction.
  • High School Commencement will be scheduled to insure that teacher-student contact shall meet or exceed the requirement of state law.

2. STAFF

  • Teachers shall be on duty a total of 185 days. (The holidays or non-duty days listed are unpaid for teachers and are not included in this total.)
  • Teacher orientation shall commence three days prior to the first day of class for all teachers and four days prior to the first day of class for new teachers.
  • A teacher inservice/work day shall be scheduled immediately following the last student contact day of the first semester; and the day following the last day of classes for students.
  • Teachers shall attend a "Back-to-School" night program scheduled in August or September. Compensatory time shall be provided in the orientation time schedule.
  • Release time for parent-teacher conferences shall be scheduled twice each year.
  • Early dismissal days may be included periodically in the calendar for staff development activities.
  • Special situations may need consideration as exceptions to the guidelines.

3. HOLIDAYS

The school calendar shall include the following holidays:

Labor Day - First Monday in September

Thanksgiving - Fourth Thursday and Friday in November

Winter Vacation - Ten week days of vacation

Vacation periods when Christmas and New Years fall on:

Sunday - Thursday, December 22 through Wednesday, January 4
Monday- Thursday, December 21 through Wednesday, January 3
Tuesday - Monday, December 24 through Friday, January 4
Wednesday - Monday, December 23 through Friday, January 3
Thursday - Monday, December 22 through Friday, January 2
Friday - Monday, December 21 through Friday, January 1
Saturday - Monday, December 20 through Friday, December 31

Martin Luther King Day - Third Monday in January

President's Day - Third Monday in February

Spring Vacation - Five week days of vacation

Memorial Day - Last Monday in May

Additional Holidays - The Superintendent may wish to include other holidays in the future. If additional holidays are included, the school ending date will be extended.
