Curriculum Development: IG

The Board of Education is required by state law to determine the educational programs to be carried on in the schools of the district and delegates to the Superintendent the authority and oversight of such programs. The 27J Schools mission of empowering every student today to take control of their future is realized by maintaining high curriculum standards and engaging students in learning the academic, social emotional, and health/wellness skills and understandings articulated within the 27J Curricular Frameworks.

27J Curricular Frameworks are the curriculum of 27J Schools and shall provide a scope and sequence of instruction based on and designed to enable students to meet or exceed the Colorado Academic Standards for student performance. In order to meet the needs of all students, a variety of educational programs and instructional strategies shall be offered.

27J Curricular Frameworks development

The 27J Curricular Frameworks shall be developed at the district level, subject to approval by the Superintendent or designee, in alignment with the Colorado Academic Standards and in accordance with the laws and regulations of the Colorado Department of Education, and shall ensure that each student will have the educational experiences needed to achieve the standards or complete the requirements and goals as listed on a student’s Individualized Education Program (IEP), which may include extended evidence outcomes.

Successful curriculum development is a collaborative process involving impacted 27J Schools staff members, others deemed appropriate by law, and the Superintendent or designee. The process will be carried out under the Superintendent´s or designee’s leadership using multiple resources and, when appropriate, carefully conducted and supervised experimentation.

All new programs and courses of study as well as the elimination and extensive alteration of the content of current programs and courses shall be determined by the Superintendent or designee for consideration and action.

Review

To meet the needs of students within a standards-based curriculum, a cyclical adaptation and development of the curriculum is required. The 27J Curricular Frameworks shall be reviewed at regular intervals to ensure that the curriculum and educational programs are effective and aligned with the Colorado Academic Standards and the district’s educational objectives. Curriculum review committees shall include administrators, teachers, and others deemed appropriate by the Superintendent or designee.

As 27J Curricular Frameworks are revised, aligned courses need to be reviewed and updated appropriately. A process shall be developed that outlines the courses to be reviewed and approved. The review shall include consideration of achievement results for all student populations, educational equity, curriculum breadth and depth, and congruence of instructional strategies and assessments with the district´s academic standards.
