Consideration of Experience  

Only credits, degrees, and related licensed experience submitted to 27J Human Resources (HR) and agreed upon by HR at the time of employment shall be considered for initial salary placement.  Only valid, verifiable, licensed teaching experience is considered for salary placement.  Applicants and new hires hold responsibility for providing accurate and valid information about former employment to HR.

All certificated/licensed personnel shall hold a current, valid, and active CDE license (or CDE authorization) and be considered “in field” in the content area related to their position.  

Required Qualifications:

1.     University credits for each course.

2.     Grade Requirement for all courses:  a letter grade of "C" or better; For non-letter graded courses: a "pass" or "satisfactory" is required.

3.     Graduate credits received after the date of confirmation of the BA or MA degree shall be counted for salary purposes except as outlined below.  Credits earned prior to the degree date shall not be counted.

Not Accepted:

  1. Credits for courses leading to another profession outside of the field of education.
  2. A duplicated course by title or content.
  3. Non-graduate level inservice credits.
  4. Substituting experience.
  5. Courses taken a) during the normal district work day, b) during paid work hours, c) programs paid by the district.  
  6. Credits earned prior to the degree date.
  7. Inservice credits from other districts.
  8. PD or inservice credits.

Step Placement  

Credit for step placement on the salary schedule may be given for the following previous validated and licensed professional experiences: 

  1. Licensed public school experience - accredited by the Colorado Department of Education and/or North Central Association or its regional equivalent in a contracted assignment with a minimum ninety (90) days, four (4) hours per day continuous assignment. 
  2. Licensed private elementary and secondary schools - accredited by Colorado Department of Education and/or North Central Association or its equivalent in a contracted assignment with a minimum ninety (90) days, four (4) hours per day continuous assignment. b. Private elementary and secondary schools - accredited by Colorado Department of Education and/or North Central Association or its equivalent in a contracted assignment with a minimum ninety (90) days, four (4) hours per day continuous assignment. 
  3. Junior college, college or university teaching -  full-time professional higher education teaching experience in institutions accredited by North Central Association or its regional equivalent.   Fractional years' experience and experience in any type of assistantship shall not be considered. 
  4. Foreign United States dependent schools.
  5. SSP licensed clinical experience: experience years that relate to their professional responsibilities. Only years served while the provider held a State certification/license shall be counted. 
  6. CTE industry experience - full time, CTE authorized educators for each verified year of direct industry experience shall receive 1 step for each year of experience over 6 years of verified experience up to step 5.   
  7. Re-employment -  a teacher who leaves the system for any reason and is re-employed will be placed according to the Certified Master Agreement.  The placement shall be dependent upon his/her education at the time of re-employment.  Fractional year's experience will be counted in accordance with state law. 

Educational Lane Advancement (Horizontal - Columns Across)

The BEA Master Agreement directs university transcripts or university official grade reports shall be submitted to HR by October 12 for September horizontal movement; and February 12 for January horizontal movement (lane movement across the schedule).   

  1. Horizontal changes on the salary schedule shall be calculated in semester hours.
  2. Grade Requirement for all courses:  
    1. a letter grade of "C" or better; For non-letter graded courses: a "pass" or "satisfactory" is required.
  3. Graduate credits received after the date of confirmation of the BA or MA degree shall be counted for salary purposes except as outlined above; credits earned prior to the degree date shall not be counted.
  4. The following degrees specifically are assigned to a specific educational lane: MA, EDS, PHD.  Only individuals with a conferred degree as outlined by the lane title shall be placed in these lanes. 
  5. A second or duplicate degree (i.e. a second Master’s Degree) does not open placement into a higher degree specific lane; rather, lane movement for a duplicate degree will occur with the specific credits awarded in accordance with the salary schedule. 
  6. The course shall apply directly to the areas approved by the district. 
  7. The course shall be taken outside of contract hours.  
  8. HR may accept inservice credits from 27J Student Achievement.  A transcript must be provided to HR following the direction and timelines outlined in this policy.  Classes must be after contract hours.  Classes must be pre-approved by 27J Student Achievement.
  9. Inservice credits from other districts shall not be accepted.

Important Information

1.     Providing the District false information, inaccurate information, and/or failing to hold a valid CDE license/authorization are each (on their own) cause for (1) withdrawing an employment offer, (2) invalidating a contract, (3) terminating employment, and/or (4) invalidating a salary offer.

2.     Situations regarding professional experience credit that may arise for which language is not clearly applicable will be jointly reviewed and considered by HR and BEA. 

3.     The District reserves the right to reject unverified experience.
