Public's Right to Know - Freedom Information Public Records: KDB

In the course of its operations, the School District creates and maintains many records that are public records under the Colorado Open Records Act (C.R.S. § 24-72-201, et seq.). The Superintendent recognizes and supports the policy underlying the open records act that members of the public shall have access to public records at reasonable times, unless a specific provision of law bars such access. At the same time, the Superintendent knows that replying to requests for public records places demands upon District resources. The open records act requires prompt response to requests for public records, while allowing a public entity to formulate rules which protect the integrity of the duties of persons in possession of the records requested.

In order to comply with the Open Records Act, to provide the public access to its records in a timely fashion, to preserve the integrity of its records, and to promote the efficient operation of the District, the Superintendent directs the Superintendent of Schools to adopt regulations governing the District's response to requests for public records, including charging for retrieval and copying of such records where appropriate.
