School Colors, Logos and Mascots: JJK-R

To select a new school’s mascot and colors, the communications department will work with the school’s principal (if available) to initiate the selection process. The work will be led by the communications department to maintain consistency across all new schools over time. The communications department will also maintain the official artwork files and back-up documentation for the selection process. The mascot name will be submitted to the superintendent for final approval.

• The Communications department works with the principal to identify stakeholders to receive suggestions for color combinations and they narrow the choices to 3-4 options. 

• Communications promotes options to the community to “vote” for their preference.
• Communications oversees the voting and tabulation of results. Communications staff will work in concert with the principal and will present the recommendation to the superintendent.
• Comms will spearhead a celebration and announcement of the colors and mascot.
• To articulate and refine the design of the mascot and logo, Comms will collaborate with Student Achievement, Bond Team, and a group of students who will likely be at the new school when it opens

Use of logos on the school campus and in the school building

• The school principal decides where the logos are painted in the school building and on school grounds, develops letterhead and correspondence stationery, promotional materials, school spirit attire, school sports uniforms with the logo, and develops any school signage with the school logo.

Logo creation guidelines and visual identity 

• Comms works with the architectural firm used in the design of the school building to create logos, usage and presentation requirements, branding, and approved standards, as authorized by district policy. All usage specifications must be met and visually approved by an authorized party within the Communications Department.
• Schools shall not use trademarked images. The communications department is responsible for identifying if a school’s logos and/or designs are in violation of these rules and laws and will work with the principal to revise or overhaul the school’s logo and design.
• The communications department will oversee all logo and mascot changes to maintain legal artwork and alignment with visual identity requirements. Changes to logos, designs, colors and mascots are allowed only in cases involving extenuating circumstances.

Schools without a Mascot

When a new school is under construction or there is no current mascot, the district’s communications department will invite stakeholders to participate in a community poll to determine their preferred school mascot. The mascot with the most votes will be presented to the superintendent for approval.

The communications department makes the district-wide announcement of the school mascot and colors.

Changing an Existing School Mascot

A principal can request a change in an existing mascot using the Mascot Change Request Form. Once complete, the form shall be submitted to the communications department, which will evaluate the extenuating circumstance prompting the request. To qualify for consideration of changing the mascot and/or design and colors, the situation should be urgent and severe. Examples include: 

• The current mascot uses a race or ethnicity as a nickname or is represented in the artwork.
• Due to cultural changes within the local community, or the current mascot is offensive to a significant portion of the school community.
• The school has been or is being reconstituted into a different type of school and requires a different designation or focus.
• The current mascot design artwork infringes on a copyright owned by another entity. 

The communications department, in collaboration with the school leadership, will survey stakeholders and will consider those results in the rebranding. The new logo selected in the process will be presented to the superintendent by the communications department for approval.
