Student Transportation Guidelines
Riding the school bus is a privilege that depends on students demonstrating safe, respectful, and responsible behavior. Students are expected to follow the 27J Student Code of Conduct and all transportation rules while at the bus stop and on board the bus.
These expectations are in place to help ensure the safety of all students, bus drivers, and our community. We appreciate your partnership and support in providing safe and reliable transportation throughout the school year.
Unassigned Student Transportation Requests
Transportation must receive permission from both parents/guardians before allowing an unassigned student to ride a route. Parents/guardians are also responsible for confirming that there is available space on the bus for an additional passenger by contacting Transportation at 303-655-2991.
Students who board a bus without prior approval or who board a bus that does not have available space will be returned to the school building and will need to contact a parent/guardian to arrange alternate transportation.
Bus Registration & Service Information
- Students must be pre-registered before transportation services can begin.
- New registrations may take up to 72 hours to process before bus service starts.
- Transportation services are dependent on available space on the assigned route.
- If a route is full, students will be placed on a waiting list until space becomes available.
- If your student is the only rider at a bus stop and does not ride for three consecutive days, transportation service may be discontinued until the parent/guardian contacts Transportation to reinstate service.
Bus Stop Expectations
- Students should arrive at their bus stop five (5) minutes before the scheduled pickup time.
- Please allow up to five (5) minutes of flexibility for unexpected delays due to traffic, trains, weather, or other circumstances.
- During extreme weather conditions, if side roads become unsafe, Transportation may contact families to arrange an alternate pickup/drop-off location.
Rules & Regulations
Transportation is an extension of the classroom. Students are expected to follow the behavior expectations outlined in the 27J Code of Conduct and District Policy JK. Behavior that compromises safety or interferes with others’ ability to learn will not be tolerated.
Examples of prohibited conduct and/or behaviors that compromise the safety of students, and that will be strictly prohibited include:
- Bullying, harassment, or threatening behavior
- Drugs and alcohol
- Dangerous or disruptive behavior
- Fighting or aggressive behavior
- Gang activity
- Inappropriate behavior
- Technology violations
- Theft and vandalism
- Weapons or dangerous items
- Other violations identified in District Policy JK
Transportation is not responsible for lost, stolen, or damaged personal items.
Items Not Allowed on the Bus
The following items are prohibited:
- Chewing gum, food, or drinks (unless secured in a lunch box or backpack)
- Animals, reptiles, insects, or other pets
- Balloons or large items that may distract the driver
- Skateboards, unless fully enclosed in a zipped bag
- Large musical instruments that block aisles or create a safety concern
- Aerosol sprays (hair spray, deodorant, etc.)
- Weapons, replicas, or facsimiles of any kind (including costume accessories)
- Glass containers
- Smoking or vaping products
- Drugs or alcohol
Preschool & Kindergarten Transportation Requirements
Preschool Students
- A parent/guardian or approved adult must meet the bus to receive the student.
- Parents/guardians must provide the names of individuals authorized to pick up their child.
- Authorized individuals must show identification and sign the preschool transportation log when receiving the student.
Kindergarten Students
- A parent/guardian or approved adult must meet the bus to receive the student.
- If a parent/guardian authorizes an older sibling to walk the kindergarten student home, written permission must be provided to the driver, including the sibling’s name and a current contact phone number
