PVMS Tiger Tuesday Update 9/29/2020
Tiger Tuesday News
September 29, 2020
October Count
Attendance is critical to student learning everyday and attending school regularly is one of the best predictors for a student’s future success. This week, known as October count, attendance counts determine the per pupil state funding our school will receive. The state requires that we are able to confirm and provide documentation for all students enrolled AND attending PVMS. It is incredibly important to us to be able to continue to provide your student with a quality learning experience and funding plays a key role in ensuring we have the staffing and resources that we need. Please be sure your student is in attendance this week(and every week!). If your student is an online learner, please be sure your student is logged in on-time to every class and that assignments are completed and turned in.
Picture Day Reminders
Blue Team (Tues/Thurs) Learners will have picture day on September 29th students will go to the library with their cohorts to take pictures.
Silver Team (Wed/Fri) Learners will have picture day on September 30th students will go to the library with their cohorts to take pictures.
Online Learners will have picture day on October 2nd. Students will use the bus lane (east side lot) to access our outside gym doors in order to get their picture taken. Please make every effort to get the pictures taken as school pictures will be used for school ids and yearbook photos.
Grades
Emails were sent home today for students who currently have 2 or F’s in their classes. If you do not already do so, please take some time to pop into the Infinite Campus Parent Portal and review your student’s updated grades. The quarter ends on October 20th, so students need to be turning in missing or incomplete work and checking with their teachers on how grades can be improved to be a true reflection of student understanding and learning.
* I mentioned last week that we are receiving A LOT of blank student assignments. Please verify that on their remote days / Online days students are completing assignments before turning them in. Also, check and make sure that students are completing assigned learning and work.
Example: Last Friday, we had only 50% of our 8th grade blended learners complete their math assessment. This assessment was to be completed on the remote (at-home) day and submitted to their math teacher. We are struggling to understand why the assigned work is not being completed and / or submitted from the remote setting. We would appreciate feedback from students and families to better understand what the barriers are to competing work remotely and motivations behind submitting blank assignments, etc.
Parent Teacher Conferences
Parent-teacher conferences will be held virtually on October 12, 2020. Your TIGER will either be invited to an awards ceremony or be asked to schedule a conference. Please reach out to your Tiger Team Teacher if you have any questions.
Questions to ask at Parent Teacher Conferences
We are here to support you and your student on their educational journey and want to help empower families to be active participants in conversations with teachers. As you meet with your student’s teachers next Monday, please consider asking them the questions below and any other questions you feel are relevant to your student’s needs.
What celebrations can you share with me about my student?
In what areas//skills/subjects does my student have high self-belief?
What are my student’s areas for improvement and how can we work together to support those needs?
Can I see some examples of my student’s work and assessments?
How is my student being challenged in your class?
How much time should my student be spending on homework from your class?
Is my student performing at grade-level? If not, what interventions are offered?
How are my student’s social interactions?
What is the best way we can continue communication?
Follow-up to Last Week’s Learner Persistence Article
In last week’s Tiger Tuesday Update, I wrote about Learner Persistence and Productive Struggle. I mentioned that a tool parents and caregivers could use when observing their student in this place is questioning.
Here are some questions parents and caregivers could ask to help their student while they are experiencing productive struggle.
What do you know about the problem or task?
What is your stuck point?
What was your mistake?
What tools or resources can you use to get unstuck?
