Happy Tuesday! Hope you all had a spooky Halloween weekend! Today marks the start of week 10 of blended and online only learning and knock on wood, we are still rocking and rolling at PVMS. On Friday, I sent you the most up to date COVID protocols, if you need the link here it is.

In order to be best prepared for full online learning, please email Jarred Ratzlaff at Jratzlaff@sd27j.net if your family is in need of a hot spot. We would like to start securing resources for our families just in case. 


Second Semester Learning Environment Choice

It’s hard to believe, but we already have our eyes on planning for the spring semester that begins in January 2020. No matter your student's current learning environment, you have the option to have them return to in-person learning (2 days a week) in January or enroll in our 100% online program. In order to best prepare and rearrange staffing if necessary, please complete the following survey included here informing us of your plans for the second semester.  You will need to fill out the form separately for each student in your family that attends PVMS.

Reporting an absence 

Please help us keep integrity in our COVID process by calling our COVID site coordinator at X5468 to report COVID symptoms.  Once it is reported that a student is experiencing symptoms, we begin a multi-step process that includes many phone calls, data tracking, and collaboration with health officials. If you child doesn’t love their new “fresh” haircut or has friends or family members in town, please say that when you call or don’t identify a specific reason.

FYI: The 27J  COVID Response Team and the health department conduct an investigation when an individual tests positive in order to determine who has  potentially been exposed by the positive individual and needs to quarantine. The definition of exposure includes being within 6ft for 15 min or longer, not wearing a mask, and direct contact. For individuals determined to have been exposed by a person who tested positive for COVID-19, the health department will require them to quarantine for 14 days after the day of exposure. If you have not been notified, the results of the investigation determine that you or your child were not exposed. We are following all guidelines from Tri-County Health and continue to work with them on contact tracing within our schools while protecting confidential health information.

Hearing and Vision Screening

Parent Survey Responses

Thank you so much for completing the parent survey. We had 443 total responses, these responses yielded some much needed information on how we can improve for our students and families. 

In this survey, each question has the possibility of earning 4 points. The survey gives 4 points for responses of strongly agree, 3 points for agree, 2 points for disagree, and 1 point for strongly disagree. Once averaged, 4 is the highest score a question can receive.  Below are the two highest and two lowest scores for PVMS. 

Question 1: Our school environment is a safe place to learn 3.59 /4.00. 

Question 3: The school keeps me informed and up-to-date through a variety of communication measures  3.59 /4.00. 

Question 6. I feel like an important member of my student’s education  3.06 / 4.00. 

Question 9. There is a focus on meeting the needs of my student and ensuring growth regardless of ability. 3.27 /4.0. 

Please email me directly with suggestions on how we can improve on questions 6 and 9. I will also be working with my Leadership Team to brainstorm ideas for improvement in these two areas. 



Explore the Good (Gratitude Lists) 

 

I always get all mushy in November and really try to show gratitude to all the wonderful people in my life. While 2020 has been questionable at best there are still a lot to be thankful for. Since this year has proven more difficult than usual to reframe negative experiences into positive action than usual, I wanted to share this strategy with you all. This is a different approach to a standard gratitude list (which is scientifically proven to benefit your mental health). This is more of a challenge to yourself to take any negative emotions or thoughts and reframe them into something else. Then, take action. There is a LOT of mental health boosting going on in this little exercise.

Businesses are closed. I can’t go anywhere.

I’ve had more time to get creative with what I have at home (cooking, crafts, gardening, etc.)

Help support businesses by purchasing take out/delivery meals or gift cards that can be used when they are open again or as gifts for the holidays.

 
Schools are remote/online. My kids aren’t learning. I can’t teach them.

I’ve had almost 8 uninterrupted months to form a closer bond with my child. The lessons she’s been learning will help her for the rest of her life.

Reach out to educators and tell them how much you appreciate them. They are struggling to keep kids engaged, learning and connected. They can use all the support they can get. Focus less on academics and more on the life lessons being presented on a daily basis. Attend to you and your child’s mental health.

 
I’m not able to see loved ones.

I have found new ways to connect. I have been reminded of how precious life is and am more open in expressing my love and appreciation for others.

Write a handwritten letter to those you love. Put into words all the things you appreciate about them. Mail it to them. Better yet, call them and read it to them. Send a care package if you’re able.

 
I’m scared.

It’s ok to be scared. I’m also resilient.

Allow yourself to feel the feelings. They are real and they should not be pushed aside. Find someone to talk to who can help – a friend, a family member or a mental health professional.

 
I am not able to do the things I normally like to do.

I’ve been able to try new things. I’ve learned to fish and have spent a lot more time outdoors. I’ve also been able to check things off my ‘to do’ list that have been sitting around for far too long.

Try something new. Maybe it’s a craft or reading a book that’s been sitting on your shelf for awhile. Get outside. Share ideas with others.

 
People are suffering. I don’t feel like I can help.

There are opportunities for us all to help those who are suffering. I have seen incredible generosity and kindness.

Find ways to support those who are suffering. Collect food for a food pantry nearby. Start a coat drive. Connect people with free or no-cost mental health supports.



Picture Day Retakes

 

PVMS retake picture day will take place on November 11 and 12th. In person learners will have the opportunity to take pictures on those days between 10-12:00pm and online learners may come in for pictures on either of those days from 1:00-3:00 pm. We will ask that our online students enter through the gym doors on the east side of the building (bus lane). 

 

Health Screeners & Safety Updates

Since we are no longer asking families to complete the district health screener, please make sure you are only sending you student to school if they are COVID symptom and fever free(see email sent from the district for details on this updated policy). We will continue to take temperatures and ask about symptoms upon arrival to school as well. Additional information will also be coming from the district. Thank you for keeping us safe and your understanding as we update systems and procedures in response to community needs and health guidance.
