Homework Folders
This year we have introduced Homework Folders as a way to help students manage their workload and assignments as well as proactively communicate with families about student work. Please take time to review every night with your student and provide encouragement and support to stay on track with their learning. A parent guardian is required to sign the homework folder form before students return each Tuesday.
Athletics Fees Update
This is a reminder that all school fees and sports fees must be paid for athletes to participate in sports. This includes current fees and past due fees.
Please also note that Athletic fees for the 22-23 school year are $150 not $125. We are so sorry about this miscommunication. If you need to set up a plan to pay this additional $25 please let our front office know.
If you qualify for Free or Reduced lunch you also receive reduced fees. Directions for that application can be found here.
8th Grade Continuation Requirements Reminder
As discussed at our required back-to-school parent meetings, there are requirements for 8th graders to participate in end-of-year celebrations including, but not limited to the Continuation Ceremony & Elitches Field Trip
Students must have
passing grades in all classes
all school fees paid
NO drug, alcohol or weapons offenses for the 22-23 school year
Our 8th grade team will work to keep families updated on missing grade and failing assignments. Parents can also look this up directly
DC Trip
Attention 8th Grade Parents! If you are interested in your student going on the Washington DC/Philadelphia trip over spring break 2023 there will be a parent meeting at Stuart Middle School on September 7th at 6:00 pm. If you have any questions please contact Kim Johnston at kjohnston@sd27j.net.
COVID Positive Case Reporting & Isolation for Students
As much as we hate to admit it, COVID is still a thing! If your student tests positive, you need to fill out the Student COVID Reporting Form, this is also linked on the 27J COVID page.
Students or parents need to report their absence per usual to their school, and should follow these instructions to help determine their isolation period (also on our the 27J website).
Orchestra Academy
Please check out this important message regarding the Orchestra Academy:
My name is Lisa Badal and this is my 5th year running a Monday program called the Orchestra Academy. Since 27J does not currently have any orchestra programs during the school day, I started the Orchestra Academy in an effort to give kids the chance to play string instruments, but also in the hopes of growing it to the point that the schools would have justification to add orchestra into their daily curriculum.
We are starting a new semester on September 12th, and I would love your help in spreading the word! I have attached the flyer to this email and I have made this video introducing each of the instruments we teach and with a little bit of information about the program: https://youtu.be/[zT0SBdTKj3M]
I have also had a lot of fun visiting several schools in the previous years, which I would love to do again! I bring all 4 instruments (violin, viola, cello, and bass) to your school and I talk a little bit about the program, introduce the instruments, and then students can have a chance to try out playing the instruments. Even if none of your students sign up for the Orchestra Academy, this has always been a really cool experience for the students, since it's not every day you get to play a cello!
We have 3 levels of orchestras — Beginning, Intermediate, and Advanced — and last year we had a total of 80 students registered. This year, I'm not planning on doing a separate recruiting trip in January, since I'm hoping to just keep students in the Beginning Orchestra for a full year (this is different from the past).
Student Fees
A reminder that student fees for the 2022-23 have been added to your student accounts. The district Fee Schedule can be found here.
Per district policy, students that participate in athletics are required to have all student fees, not just athletic fees.
Lunch
School breakfast and lunch are sadly no longer free for all students. The federal program that paid for these meals the last two years has ended and so students are now required to pay the following costs:
Breakfast- $2.25
Lunch- $3.75
Please encourage your student(s) to eat during the school day, this is an important part of taking care of themselves.
In order to receive free or reduced meals (as well as reduced fees) please make sure to complete the annual Free & Reduced Lunch application. Directions can be found here.
