During 27J Schools’ virtual board of education meeting held on April 28, Superintendent of Schools Dr. Chris Fiedler announced that the District had decided to postpone the opening of its newest school, Elaine Padilla Elementary until August 2021.
The decision to postpone opening Padilla Elementary is based on lower than expected enrollment numbers for the previously scheduled August 2020 opening, combined with impending funding cuts due to the economic impacts of COVID-19.
“27J Schools is taking a very conservative approach as we prepare for our 2020-2021 budget and beyond,” said Superintendent Dr. Chris Fiedler. “The decision to delay the opening of Padilla Elementary was made after thoughtful consideration of many factors including enrollment capacity, costs associated with managing and maintaining a new building, staffing, and best use of resources. This is not a decision we have come to lightly, but know that it is the right decision to make given our current situation.”
Located in the Brighton Crossings Subdivision, Padilla Elementary was set to open to students in August 2020. 27J Schools is working to place Padilla certified and classified staff at other locations throughout the District. Families of students enrolled in Padilla Elementary will be contacted by school personnel to find the best placement for their child come the fall.
