OTMS students place 3rd in Stock Market Experience
Students at Overland Trail Middle School are celebrating their third-place finish in the statewide Economic Literacy Colorado’s state-wide 2019 Stock Market Experience.
The Stock Market Experience (SME) is a FREE, robust online, real-time investment simulation program that teaches students about personal financial literacy and economics. The SME utilizes user-friendly technology that can be accessed anywhere at any time. Student teams invest a virtual $100,000 in stocks, bonds, mutual funds, and ETFs on the US markets.
“To me, SME was a surprisingly fun journey. I knew that if we wanted to win, we would have to think things through strategically. We couldn’t just buy random stocks. We had to seriously look at the pros and cons of each purchase. All in all, SME was a super fun experience,” Katherine Egarton, 7th grade.
“At first, you don’t really know what you’re doing, you’re taking a lot of risks hoping for rewards. But as you move forward in the experience you feel really hopeful. Although, you might think it’s just a simulation it feels like the real thing. Overall, it was a phenomenal experience full of ups and downs. We really enjoyed learning how to balance funds and what to invest in and what to avoid,” Valeria Sanchez-Rodriguez, 7th grade.
Overland Trail Middle teachers and students will be presented with their award at the Stock Market Experience 2019 awards ceremony to be held at the Denver Zoo on April 30.
