Kaiser Permanente awards 27J $24,500 grant

At 27J Schools, we are always looking for different ways to provide our staff with opportunities that will benefit them in the workplace and their own personal lives. Recently, 27J district wellness coordinator Lori Marten was awarded a grant to provide all 27J with such an opportunity.

Given the continued uncertainty and challenges school districts are currently facing, Kaiser Permanente, along with 30 other contributing partners, developed a playbook to equip school and district leaders with specific, evidence-informed guidance that addresses key mental, physical and social health needs of the educational community. Kaiser Permanente invited select districts to apply for a grant of up to $24,500. Spoiler alert: 27J Schools was awarded the full amount of this grant!

Based on employee interest and feedback, the grant will be pay for any 27J employee to take a course on Self-Compassion Training for the Education Community - offered by Mindful Schools and The Center for Mindful Self-Compassion (CMSC). This 6-week course was designed and will be taught by three leading experts in the field, most notably, Kristin Neff, PhD.

Kristin Neff, PhD is co-founder of the Center for Mindful Self-Compassion and co-developer of Mindful Self-Compassion. She is a pioneer in the field of self-compassion research, being the first person to operationally define and measure the construct. Neff has published numerous academic articles and bestselling books on this topic. She gives talks on self-compassion and leads MSC workshops around the world.

Lori Marten knows that a course led by leading experts in self-compassion like Neff will impact 27J positively. “The anticipated outcomes for our 27J community, beyond incorporating core practices into daily life, are first and foremost to learn and practice techniques to reduce educator and caregiver fatigue, develop an open heart and resilience through self-appreciation, respond to negative thought patterns with self-kindness and apply strategies to transform difficult relationships.”

Thank you Kaiser Permanente for partnering with 27J to provide this unique opportunity! The act of self-compassion is fundamental for the success of our education community.
